We Put It in Writing

You wouldn’t begin a road trip to a place you’ve never been before without a map. Why would you embark on a new project without the tools to get you to your goal?

Nobody likes documentation. It’s difficult to write, no two people say the same thing in the same way, and it’s hardly ever current. But, we can’t be successful without it.

We sit in meetings, discuss our ideas, and come to an agreement. Then everyone goes off and does what was agreed to. Right? Unfortunately, that rarely happens. That’s why the decisions must be documented. It’s not that people intend to deviate from the path, there are lots of ways to lose direction.

People remember the discussion and conclusions differently.
One person has a better idea and assumes that "this one little change" won’t affect anyone else on the project.
As time passes, people will be added to and leave the project.
In the buzz of daily distraction, we forget.

A written document helps everyone avoid these pitfalls. The longer the project, the larger the group, the more diverse the disciplines involved, the more documentation is an absolute necessity.
